A Spanish Anki deck can contain thousands of cards and still leave you unsure what to study next. For reading, a better starting question is: “Do these cards help me understand the Spanish I actually meet?”

Look for clear meanings, understandable examples, and cards that test a manageable task. You can adapt a shared deck, build your own from reading, or combine the two. This guide explains how to choose, gives you original sample cards, and walks through a straightforward text-file import.

Choose a deck by its questions, not its size

Before committing to a deck, inspect several cards from the part you intend to study. Read the Spanish and check what you would be expected to answer. A beginner vocabulary list, a collection of full sentences, and a verb-conjugation deck serve different purposes.

Your immediate goalA useful starting formatWhat to check
Understand the words in a storySpanish word or phrase inside a sentence, with a meaning on the backYou understand the sentence after checking the target
Learn everyday nounsNoun with its article, an example or image, and a clear meaningThe intended meaning and gender are clear
Practise producing a phraseA short situation or English prompt, with an appropriate Spanish answerThe prompt allows you to judge equivalent answers fairly
Practise a particular verb formA sentence with a marked gap and enough information to identify the formPerson, tense and intended meaning are specified

For any ready-made deck, check these details:

  • Examples: Do they show how the target works, or merely add more unfamiliar words?
  • Meanings: Is the answer right for the sentence? A word with several senses needs a specific one here.
  • Language variety: Are regional words or forms labelled when relevant to your goal?
  • Audio: If pronunciation is part of your plan, can you preview the recordings and identify how they were produced?
  • Usability: Can you read the cards comfortably on the device you review with? Does the description mention required add-ons or a special template?

A large deck may be a useful source of material without being a useful daily syllabus. Start with cards you understand and want to learn. You can leave the rest for later.

Where to find Spanish Anki decks

AnkiWeb's Spanish shared-deck search is a place to compare available decks and inspect their descriptions. Treat star ratings, download counts and words such as “complete” as reasons to investigate, not proof that a deck suits you.

The sample cards matter more than the deck's headline. If a deck shows dirección as “direction” in a sentence about a street address, revise that note before learning it. If you cannot tell what an answer is testing, choose another example or rewrite the prompt.

Anki supports importing shared deck packages through its apps; a shared deck cannot be added directly to AnkiWeb without an app import first. Follow the official getting-started instructions for that workflow.

You can also create a small personal deck from stories you read. This makes it easier to remember why you selected a phrase. It does require checking the meaning and making the question clear, rather than copying every unfamiliar sentence into a queue.

A small original set you can try

These examples follow Clara after she finds someone else's note inside a library book. Each card asks for the meaning of the marked expression. They were written for this guide and are not copied from a commercial course or book.

FrontBack
La bibliotecaria le presta otro libro. What does the marked word mean here?presta = lends. The librarian lends her another book.
La nota tiene una dirección y un número de teléfono. What does the marked word mean here?dirección = address. The note has an address and a phone number.
Clara se da cuenta de que la nota no es suya. What does the marked phrase mean here?se da cuenta de = realises. Clara realises that the note is not hers.
La nota no es suya. Clara quiere devolverla a su dueño. What does the marked word mean here?devolverla = return it. The note is not hers. Clara wants to return it to its owner. Here, la refers to la nota.
Mientras espera, Clara sigue leyendo. What does the marked phrase mean here?sigue leyendo = keeps reading. While she waits, Clara keeps reading.
Después, Clara guarda el libro en la mochila. What does the marked word mean here?guarda = puts away. Afterward, Clara puts the book in her backpack.

You can copy these into Anki as separate Front and Back fields. The devolverla example includes la nota in the question so that the pronoun has a clear reference when the card appears by itself. If you prefer to practise the infinitive alone, change the front to Clara quiere devolver la nota a su dueño and mark devolver.

Try the 20-card sentence sample with the same recognition format. The sample instructions and complete original scene explain what each field contains.

Pick a note type before importing

In Anki, a note stores information in fields. A card is the question-and-answer view generated from that information. One note can generate more than one card, depending on its note type.

For the two-column examples above, use Basic: the Spanish sentence and question go in Front, and the meaning goes in Back. Basic produces one card per note. Basic (and reversed card) creates both directions, which would double the number of cards in this sample and make the detailed answer into a question. That is not the intended format. Anki's note-type explanation

Use Cloze when you intentionally want a missing-expression question. For example:

Mientras espera, Clara {{c1::sigue::seguir in the present tense}} leyendo.

The target on this card is sigue. The hint specifies the verb and tense, and Clara supplies the person. Put “Clara keeps reading while she waits” and a note about seguir + gerund in the Extra field. Anki's cloze instructions

A sentence with plain square brackets is not automatically a cloze note. The companion TSV uses square brackets to mark a visible target and belongs in Basic, with no hidden words.

Import a two-column TSV into Anki

TSV means tab-separated values. Each row contains one note, with a tab between fields. Save it as UTF-8 to preserve Spanish accents.

In desktop Anki:

  1. Create a deck, such as Spanish Reading, then choose the TSV through File → Import.
  2. Select Basic, your deck and Tab as the separator.
  3. Map column 1 to Front, column 2 to Back. The sample is plain text; leave HTML processing off.
  4. Check the preview, import, and inspect a few notes in Browse.

The sample has 20 rows with no heading to become an accidental card. Anki's text-import documentation

Before reimporting, check duplicate settings: Anki can use the first field to match notes and update them. Changing a front can affect matching. Choose to ignore existing matches for a trial import. Anki's duplicate handling

For a first file, use two fields and single-line sentences without embedded tabs.

Export vocabulary you save in LingoReader

If your cards start in LingoReader, open a flashcard deck, select the cards to export, choose Export, and select Anki. The export produces a TSV file. Its preview and advanced options let you check the content and choose the fields and their order. LingoReader's export help

Map those columns to the note type you intend to use in Anki. A visible sentence and its meaning fit a Basic recognition card. A field containing Anki cloze syntax needs a compatible Cloze note type. The export's fields may differ from the two-column sample in this article, so use its actual preview rather than assuming the same mapping.

This is a file export. It does not automatically synchronise Anki and LingoReader or transfer LingoReader review schedules. New notes need to be studied in Anki according to your Anki setup. You can also keep reviewing in LingoReader with its built-in spaced repetition if moving files adds work you do not want.

Make the deck manageable after import

The first review session is a chance to see whether the cards work for you. If a sentence needs extensive explanation, set that card aside and choose an easier example. In Anki, Suspend removes a card from reviews until you restore it; you can edit the note before returning it to study. Anki's study controls

Start with a small number of new cards that fits beside your reading. If reviews begin consuming the time you meant to spend with a story, introduce fewer new cards. There is no need to empty a large imported deck's new-card queue quickly.

Use one broad deck for Spanish reading unless you have a concrete reason to study material separately. You can record a book title or topic in tags instead of creating a separate deck for every chapter. Anki's content-organisation guidance explains that distinction.

Keep checking what the card helps you do. An answer such as “continues reading” is fine for sigue leyendo, even if the back says “keeps reading.” Remembering one English wording is not the goal. Understanding the next occurrence of the Spanish expression is.

Choose one short text from the beginner Spanish story collection, read it, and add a few expressions you would like to recognise again. A small deck you can explain is a useful place to begin.
