A guide to LingoReader

Read a story. Keep the words that matter.

LingoReader is a browser-based reading app for language learners. Read books and articles with contextual word help, sentence translation and vocabulary review.

Start with something you want to read

Try a complete B1 Spanish story with word meanings and an English translation, without an account. Create an account when you want to save your place and build a personal Library.

In the app, choose a classic or original short story from our collection, bring a DRM-free EPUB or MOBI, import a public article by its link, or paste text. Find a book or follow the import instructions.

Languages and devices

LingoReader supports English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, German, Italian and Polish. It runs in a browser on a computer, tablet or phone. You can adjust fonts, spacing, themes, and scrolling or paged reading.

The collection includes classics and original stories with approximate editorial levels. A story’s level is its writing target; a classic’s range is guidance for that edition. These labels are not certified CEFR assessments.

Get help without leaving the story

Tap an unfamiliar word for a definition and translation. Select a sentence for translation or explanation. AI assistance can make mistakes, especially with idioms or ambiguous passages: compare the answer with the surrounding text.

Downloaded books and saved articles can be read offline. New AI lookups, translations, vocabulary checks and preparation require an internet connection. Previously saved learning content remains available when it is stored on your device. Prepare for offline reading.

Online AI assistance uses your weekly credits. Reading itself stays available when your allowance runs out.

Find reading that fits your vocabulary

Reading fit estimates how familiar a book or article’s vocabulary may be for you, using your language profile and reading and study activity. An optional vocabulary check lets you answer Known, Unsure or Unknown for selected words and refine the estimate. You can start reading before doing a check.

Illustrative example

Two readers, the same mystery

Imagine a short mystery marked Manageable for you. You can follow the action, but stop at several unfamiliar expressions. A more experienced reader might see Comfortable for that same text.

Try a few paragraphs first. If the pauses feel distracting, choose an easier story or use a vocabulary check. If a familiar word is treated as unfamiliar, choose Known; if you want to practise it, choose Learning. Your explicit vocabulary choices take priority over automatic estimates.

These are fictional readers and example labels, not measured results for a published book. A fit estimate does not guarantee comprehension: subject knowledge, grammar, style and the help you use also matter.

Read a short sample and adjust your choice based on how it feels. An unavailable or unfinished fit check never needs to stop you reading.

Build vocabulary from your own reading

Save useful words and phrases as flashcards, including the sentence where you met them. Review them with built-in spaced repetition in LingoReader, or export cards to Anki or a spreadsheet.

Optional chapter warm-up previews and practises words before a chapter. You can skip it and read immediately. Warm-up and optional practice do not reschedule your existing reviews; scheduled reviews remain a separate activity.
